CRISIS MANAGEMENT
"Are You Ready?"
Thoughts on the professional's responsibility to be prepared to handle various crisis situations.
~ by Richard K. Nongard, LMFT/CCH
Crisis: An unexpected situation that breeds uncertainty or fear, thus creating emotional and/or physical chaos.
You may not work in a war zone or run a shelter, and you may not answer a crisis hotline, but as a mental health professional, no matter your employment settings, you must still be adept at handling a multitude of potential crisis situations.
Suicide, rape, domestic violence, financial ruin, critical illness, death, grief, loss....
At some point in your career, you will have a suicidal client or work with family or friends impacted by suicide. At some point you will work with someone who has been physically or sexually assaulted. At some point you will help someone who has lost a child, or their job or home.
Every crisis is different – different precipitating events, different people involved, different responses. But they must all be managed, efficiently and ethically.
Your job will be to help them take control of their confusion, anger, anxiety, depression, guilt. You will have to help them get organized and make difficult decisions. They are counting on you to help them through the process of healing and recovery.
Are you prepared? How current is your list of community support resources? When is the last time you evaluated someone for suicidal ideation and do you know the four primary reasons why someone would think that way? Do you recognize the signs of sophisticated emotional abuse, when there are no bruises? Do you understand the fluctuating cycle of grief and why someone may become 'stuck' or emotionally paralyzed and unable to function or move forward?
Can you handle these situations ethically, to both minimize your own liability and maximize client care?
If you paused over any of these questions, please do yourself and your clients a favor and brush up on these topics. Continuing education is not just about meeting annual state licensure renewal requirements, but about making sure you are knowledgeable and qualified to handle difficult situations when they are presented.
