Medical Meditation Instructor Gets a Taste of His Own Medicine
Richard Nongard has released his new book, "Medical Meditation" based on his own experiences as both a patient and meditation instructor.
Scottsdale, AZ, February 13, 2010 --(PR.com)-- For years Richard Nongard taught other professionals how to use the techniques of meditation to help patients recover from surgery and disease. Last year he found himself on the other side of the fence, and used these same methods to speed healing and recovery from his own joint-fusion surgery for the treatment of arthritis. Nongard said, “The research shows those who learn simple meditation techniques recover faster from surgery” and added, “In my case, I practiced what I preached and according my foot surgeon, recovered weeks ahead of other patients who had the same type of surgery.”
He has just released a new guidebook, Medical Meditation: How to Reduce Pain, Decrease Complications and Recover Faster from Surgery, Disease and Illness. In this short book Nongard aims to teach others the principles of medical meditation that he found so helpful following surgery. “I live an active life, and I really didn't want to be shut in, so I did what I ask my patients to do, and it worked.”
Research shows that meditation can have direct benefit by impacting both the psychological aspects of recovery and boosting the body's physical ability to heal faster. Over 191 studies have confirmed that those who learn meditation techniques, and practice them, reduce pain and recover faster – with fewer complications.
In his book, Nongard outlines non-religious methods of meditation that have proven to be effective and easy to do. The book draws form his experiences as a professional meditation instructor and from the other side, as a patient. He says that patients with chronic pain, those preparing for surgery and those who want to avoid surgical complications can benefit from the exercises in this book. Nongard stressed, “It is a mistake to assume meditation requires funny and difficult physical poses or long periods of boring silence. Many beneficial techniques can be mastered in 2-3 minute exercises and can be done simply sitting in a chair.”
According to Nongard meditation is mental exercise that prepares a person to face change, promote healing and experience serenity during difficult times. He states his goal in writing this guidebook is to enhance the lives of readers with simple strategies that can be learned quickly. He called his book an “airplane” book, explaining it is designed to be a quick read for the person who has no knowledge of meditation, or perhaps isn't even interested in meditation, but has heard of the health benefits meditation can bring.
Richard Nongard holds degrees in both counseling and religion, and has worked on physician directed treatment teams in a variety of medical and psychiatric facilities.
